VERSE:
Philippians 4:6-7 (New International Version)
6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
LESSON:
Should we really ask God for things?
Yes...but. Yes we should ask God for things. The But relates to...what is it we should be asking God for. This verse seems to be telling us that we should ask God for help with things in our life which may be causing us to be anxious. Perhaps we are going through a change in our life, like graduating from school, taking on a new job, getting married, moving to a new city, having a child. All of these life changes can make the best of us anxious. This verse tells us to "not be anxious about anything". It tells us that "by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God. In return for following this guidance, this verse promises "Peace" which will "guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus". What kind of "peace"? The kind of peace from God "which transcends all understanding". This is "Peace" so wonderful...the verse tells us, we may not be able to intellectually understand it...but we will surely experience it.
