Faith - Justified by Faith, not works

VERSE:

Galatians 2:16

16 nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified.

LESSON:

Faith - Justified by Faith, not works

This verse is not telling you to stop performing works of kindness, mercy, and Christian assistance to others, but is instead explaining that it is NOT your works that justify (To declare innocent or guiltless) you before God/Jesus...it is your faith. The Law teaches us how to live in this world/life, but Faith enables us to live the proper way in this life, according to the Law.

Faith - Faith requires works

VERSE:

James 2:14-17

14 What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and be filled," and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that? 17 Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.

LESSON:

Faith - Faith requires works

In this verse. we are told that if you have faith you must have works. If you have faith without works, then you really do not have the faith that you claim that you have. They are inseparable. They go together. Faith without works...is dead.

Faith - You must believe...to please God

VERSE:

Hebrews 11:6

6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.

LESSON:

Faith - You must believe...to please God

This verse tells us that in order to please God...we must first believe. If you seek him, thorough faith, you will find him. Once you find him, and learn about God, you are better able to do his will (Please God). God will reward those who earnestly seek him.

The Ascension - At the Right Hand of God

LESSON:

Acts 1:9-11

9 And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them. 11 They also said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven."

VERSE:

The Ascension - At the Right Hand of God

This verse expresses the eyewitness account of Jesus' ascension into Heaven...on a cloud. It gives us the assurance that Jesus returned to God in heaven, to sit at his right hand, as predicted in the Bible. It also gives us the hope and expectation of Jesus' future return. When? Only God knows for Sure...as Jesus told us in the New Testament. How will we know that he has indeed returned? We will see a sign, as explained in the last sentence of this verse as follows: "...This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven...". How? "...on a cloud...".

Holy Spirit - Witness for Jesus

VERSE:

Acts 1:6-8

6 So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, "Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?" 7 He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; 8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth."

LESSON:

Holy Spirit - Witness for Jesus

In this verse the Disciples, meeting with Jesus after he had risen from the dead, wanted to know from Jesus if the time had come for God to restore "the Kingdom to Israel" (Remember that Rome had conquered and had taken over the entire area of Palestine, including Jerusalem and the surrounding areas). Jesus turned their focus away from "Earthly Kingdoms"....to the pursuit of "Heavenly Kingdoms". It is only for God to know...when "The Kingdom of God" will be restored here on earth. It is for us to focus on receiving the power of the Holy Spirit, to equip us to witness for Jesus. Jesus' direction was direct and easy to understand. "...you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth." Our job is to answer Jesus' call...and be the best and most effective "witness" that we can be for Christ. God will take care of "Restoring his Kingdom" here on earth...in his own time.

Holy Spirit - Baptized again

VERSE:

Acts 1:4-5

4 Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, "Which," He said, "you heard of from Me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."

LESSON:

Holy Spirit - Baptized again

This verse recounts some of the last interaction that Jesus had with his Disciples before he ascended into Heaven.  Jesus had one final task to perform before his work on earth was complete.  He needed to insure that the Disciples were waiting for, and ready to accept, the arrival of the Holy Spirit.  This had been promised before.  It was now time for the Holy spirit to fill the Disciples to help and support them in their missions.  As Jesus said, the receiving of the Holy Spirit was similar to the baptism by water, but would be instead a baptism by spirit.

The Message and the Messengers - We are called to convey "The Good News"

VERSE:

Mark 16:19-20

19 So then, when the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.  20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the signs that followed.   And they promptly reported all these instructions to Peter and his companions. And after that, Jesus Himself sent out through them from east to west the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation.

LESSON:

The Message and the Messengers - We are called to convey "The Good News"

In this verse, we are told that Jesus gave final instructions to the Disciples, before he was taken back into Heaven to be "...at the right hand of God...".  We were not there...but the calling from Jesus is as real today as it was all of those years ago.  Our calling is to preach and teach the "Good News", the "Word of God"...from East to West...so that all may know of the promise of "...eternal salvation..."  Know these truths for yourself...and share them liberally with all that you meet.

Belief - Believe and be saved

VERSE:

Mark 16:16

16 "He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned."

LESSON:

Belief - Believe and be saved

This verse may seem quite stern.  There is no way to soften the intended message being sent here.  We all have a choice in life, to believe, or not to believe in Christ Jesus.  As is the case with most things in life, choices have consequences.  It is also so with your choices of believing in God/Jesus....or choosing not to believe.  The choice is actually very clear and very easy to accomplish, for those who what to.  Believe, be baptized...and be saved, or disbelieved and be condemned.  It is your choice.  Your free will.  No one if forcing you.  How would you accept the direction of your Physician if he/she told you that unless you choose a method of treatment, you would die very quickly.  This lesson is no different of a choice, although it may take longer for the consequences of your decision to be realized.   The choice is yours.  Believe and be saved.

Discipleship - Make Disciples, Baptize, and teach

VERSE:

Matthew 28:16-20

16 But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated.  17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful.  18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.  19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

LESSON:

Discipleship - Make Disciples, Baptize, and teach

What instructions did Jesus give to the eleven disciples at their first meeting after he had risen?  He was not simply talking to them, he was handing out assignments.  He had a very important assignment for each of them.  This assignment is now know as "The Great Commission".  Jesus commanded them to spread the Good News and to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them.  Under what authority did Jesus claim to be able to make such an assignment?  By his receiving all authority in both heaven and on earth.  What was Jesus promising to do to help this mission be successful?  He promised to be with us always...even to the end of the age (forever).

Belief - Belief...should lead to action

VERSE:

Mark 16:14-16

14 Afterward He appeared to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at the table; and He reproached them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who had seen Him after He had risen.  15 And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.  16" He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.

LESSON:

Belief - Belief...should lead to action

In this verse, Jesus again appeared to his followers, in this story to the eleven remaining Disciples (not including Judas).  Unfortunately, it was not an entirely pleasant reunion between Jesus and the Disciples.  Even though he had foretold to them, what would happen to him, they still did not understand or believe that he would die, be risen from the dead, and return to them.  They were still in disbelief.  They did not believe the other eyewitnesses, because they did not see it for themselves.  Belief sometimes must take place without all of the physical evidence that you may want to be provided to you.  Once you believe, you should feel called to action.  In this verse, Jesus directly calls all of the Disciples who claimed to believe in him...to go into all of the world..and preach the gospel to all creation (to everyone everywhere).  Each day we need to reexamine our degree of belief in Christ Jesus.  Could others around us tell that we are believers?  Are we doing anything constructive and meaningful in sharing the Gospel, simply because of our belief?  Can we do more?

The Resurrection - Dead and Buried...and risen!

VERSE(S):

Mark 15:42-47

Jesus Is Buried

When evening had already come, because it was the preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea came, a prominent member of the Council, who himself was waiting for the kingdom of God; and he gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus.  44 Pilate wondered if He was dead by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He was already dead.  45 And ascertaining this from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.  46 Joseph bought a linen cloth, took Him down, wrapped Him in the linen cloth and laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.  47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were looking on to see where He was laid.

Mark 16:1-13

The Resurrection

1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might come and anoint Him.  2 Very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen.  3 They were saying to one another, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?"  4 Looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away, although it was extremely large.  5 Entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe; and they were amazed.  6 And he said to them, "Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified He has risen; He is not here; behold, here is the place where they laid Him.  7 "But go, tell His disciples and Peter, 'He is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He told you.'"  8 They went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had gripped them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.  9 Now after He had risen early on the first day of the week, He first appeared to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons.  10 She went and reported to those who had been with Him, while they were mourning and weeping.  11 When they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they refused to believe it.  12 After that, He appeared in a different form to two of them while they were walking along on their way to the country.  13 They went away and reported it to the others, but they did not believe them either.

LESSON:

The Resurrection - Dead and Buried...and risen!

In order to believe...or to disbelieve the Resurrection...you need to hear the entire story.  You need to hear the facts.  You need to hear eyewitness testimony.  Today's lesson is about Easter Sunday....or Resurrection Sunday.  However, today's story actually needs to pick up immediately after the death of Jesus on the cross.  In legal or investigative terms, we would want to follow the trail of evidence.  Corroborate stories from eyewitnesses, especially those who had nothing to gain by misleading us.  Pilate and the Centurion (Roman Solder) are just such witnesses.  Pilate was trying to protect himself.  He had heard the claims of Jesus of "I will be back", as told by the Jewish leaders.  He did not want to take any chances before turning over the body of Jesus to a 3rd party.  He needed to know if he was really dead.  He was, the Centurion testified.  Pilot therefore agreed to release Jesus' body to Joseph of Arimathea.  Joseph was not one of the 12 Disciples.  He placed Jesus' body into a tomb, and had a very large and heavy stone placed over the opening to the tomb where Jesus now lay.  There were witnesses to this, including Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses.  Well, it now sounds like the "Case is closed".  It is finished.  Or is it?  The next day, Mary Magdalene, along with 2 other women, came to place spices on Jesus' body, but realized that they have forgotten one very important fact.  How would they be able to remove the large stone that covered the entrance to the tomb.  To their amazement, the stone was rolled away, and Jesus was NOT there.  A man in a white robe (presumably an angel) told the women that "...He has risen..., He is not here".  So, what was the "Good News" of that event?  Jesus had risen...exactly as he had told other before the Crucifixion.  Did everyone who had been a follower of Jesus immediately believe the eyewitness accounts?  No.  Many who heard the first accounts of the Resurrection from Mary did not believe it.  Even after 2 other eyewitness said they had seen Jesus on the road, they still did not believe.  Well, it is now up to us to answer the question.  Do we (you and me) believe?

The Crucifixion - Truly this man was the Son of God

VERSE:

Mark 15:22-39

22 Then they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.  23 They tried to give Him wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it.  24 And they crucified Him, and divided up His garments among themselves, casting lots for them to decide what each man should take.  25 It was the third hour when they crucified Him.   26 The inscription of the charge against Him read, THE KING OF THE JEWS."  27 They crucified two robbers with Him, one on His right and one on His left.  28 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "And He was numbered with transgressors."  29 Those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads, and saying, "Ha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save Yourself, and come down from the cross!"  31 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying, "He saved others; He cannot save Himself.  32 "Let this Christ, the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, so that we may see and believe!" Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.  33 When the sixth hour came, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour.  34 At the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "ELOI, ELOI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?" which is translated, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?"   35 When some of the bystanders heard it, they began saying, "Behold, He is calling for Elijah."  36 Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, "Let us see whether Elijah will come to take Him down."  37 And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed His last.  38 And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.  39 When the centurion, who was standing right in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!"

LESSON:

The Crucifixion - Truly this man was the Son of God

This verse recounts the final hours of Jesus' life here on earth.  This is the event that he was destined to go through since his birth in Bethlehem.  It was THE EVENT that God had sent him to earth to endure.  This story recounts just some of the painful, cruel, lonely, mocking, and insulting experience that Jesus had to endure...even up the moment of his last human breath here on earth.  Where were the cheering crowds of Palm Sunday?  Where were the loving and supportive Disciples?  Where were any of his other followers and supporters?  Not there.  Jesus had to do it alone.  He did it for us...alone, even to the point of his experiencing an actual separation from God.  On this day, who spoke up for Jesus?  Who spoke at least one positive word in support of or in favor of Christ Jesus?  Only one.  In a bit of extreme irony, only the Centurion (a Roman Solder) who was quite possibly one of a number who had taken part in the Crucifixion of Jesus actually spoke up on his behalf and said..."Truly this man was the Son of God!"  Reflect upon this today.  Have you in some ways abandoned God/Jesus in your daily life?  Are you just a curious onlooker?  Are you a mocker?  Are you a church leader that does not really live out the Word of God?  Are you actually doing things directly or indirectly in your life that serves to spiritually crucify Jesus again and again. In some respects, I think that we are all at least just a bit like some of these "onlookers" in the crowd.  Perhaps not as bad, but just not good enough on our own to be found in the company of this one man....who was said by the Centurion to be "Truly, ...the Son of God".

The Last Supper - Bread broken for you

VERSE:

Matthew 26:26-29

26 While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, "Take, eat; this is My body."   27 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you; 28 for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.  29 "But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom."

LESSON:

The Last Supper - Bread broken for you

In this verse, the writer in Matthew recounts the events of the Last Supper.  The last meal that Jesus had with his Disciples before he was betrayed and the events of Good Friday and Easter Sunday took place.  Read the words carefully, and realize that God provided a sacrifice for the forgiveness of our sins in the person of Jesus Christ.  Each time you take Communion, you are celebrating and remembering that priceless gift from God.

Wisdom - Who is wiser, Man or God?

VERSE:

1 Corinthians 2:4-5 (New American Standard Bible)

4 and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.

LESSON:

Wisdom - Who is wiser, Man or God?

This verse makes it plain that preaching should not be based upon the wisdom of man, but instead, on the power of God, and of the Holy Spirit.  Why?  Persuasive words of man are temporary.  The wisdom of God is eternal.

Wisdom - How did Jesus' Wisdom grow?

VERSE:

Luke 2:39-40

39 When Jesus’ parents had fulfilled all the requirements of the law of the Lord, they returned home to Nazareth in Galilee. 40 There the child grew up healthy and strong. He was filled with wisdom, and God’s favor was on him.

LESSON:

Wisdom - How did Jesus' Wisdom grow?

This verse does not really tell us exactly how that happened, but it does state that he "...was filled with wisdom, and God's favor was on him...".  This verse seems to be saying that either Jesus was already filed with Wisdom as a child, or that God favor imparted it to him.  In either case, Jesus was deemed "Wise" from a very early age.  We should all follow the teachings of the one that had God's favor upon him and was filled with Godly wisdom from the time he was a child.  Jesus is this person.

Wisdom - Are Children born wise?

VERSE:

Proverbs 29:15

15 To discipline a child produces wisdom, but a mother is disgraced by an undisciplined child.

LESSON:

Wisdom - Are Children born wise?

No.  They gain wisdom...one life lesson at a time.  How do we acquire wisdom?  We must be taught it.  By whom?  Our Parents, School Teachers, Sunday School Teachers, Ministers, and others that love and care for and about us.  In this verse, we are told that, in most cases, the first person to begin to impart wisdom to us...is our mothers.  What happens if mothers do not take this responsibility seriously?  They can become embarrassed...because one of the traits of the child without adequate age appropriate wisdom...is being "undisciplined".

Wisdom - Can you be too wise?

VERSE:

1 Corinthians 3:19 (New Living Translation)

19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say,

   “He traps the wise
in the snare of their own cleverness.”

LESSON:

Wisdom - Can you be too wise?

It depends upon whose perspective you are considering.  The Worlds, or Gods.  This verse tells us that unless you have wisdom from God, rather that just what the world thinks is wisdom, you may get trapped in your own cleverness.  (You may think that you are wiser than you really are).

Thursday, March 31, 2011

Wisdom - Whose wisdom is wiser, Man's or Gods?

VERSE:

1 Corinthians 1:20-25

20 Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 22 Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

LESSON:

Wisdom - Whose wisdom is wiser, Man's or Gods?

This verse is very clear in that answer. Are there really that many "Wise" persons living on earth today? I am sure that more persons think they are wiser than they really are...especially in God's eyes. Why? Christ was the human manifestation of God's wisdom here on earth. Unless you accept and understand Christ's teaching, you have missed God's wisdom being shared with the world. Many have misunderstood or outright rejected the teaching of Jesus. This verse explains why some people..."just don't get it"...and others "get it". If you want to seek and find Godly wisdom...start with the teachings of Jesus Christ!

Wisdom - Jesus will provide you words and wisdom to testify to your faith!

VERSE:

Luke 21:15

15 For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.

LESSON:

Wisdom - Jesus will provide you words and wisdom to testify to your faith!

In this verse Jesus tells his followers that they will face many obstacles and opposition if they choose to follow him and to testify to the words and deeds of Christ. He encouraged them to stand firm in their beliefs., and he promised them that "...I will give you words and wisdom that non of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict..." as we provide our witness, and testify to our faith. Stand firm if others challenge your faith and your beliefs in Christ Jesus. He will provide you "...words and wisdom..." that will support your faith and your beliefs.

Wisdom - following your parents instructions...leads to wisdom

VERSE:

Proverbs 4:1-6

1 Listen, my sons [daughters], to a father’s instruction; pay attention and gain understanding. 2 I give you sound learning, so do not forsake my teaching. 3 For I too was a son [daughter] to my father, still tender, and cherished by my mother. 4 Then he taught me, and he said to me, “Take hold of my words with all your heart; keep my commands, and you will live. 5 Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or turn away from them. 6 Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you.

LESSON:

Wisdom - following your parents instructions...leads to wisdom

This verse gives us information about one way to gain wisdom more quickly in life. You can listen to your parent's Godly wisdom and teaching, and receive the benefits of the prior life experiences [good and bad] of your parents. But, yes, if you really want to...you can refuse to listen to the experience and wisdom of your Godly parents...and then you can have all of the fun of making ALL of your OWN mistakes in life on your own...all by yourself. Or, you can try to LEARN from the past mistakes of your parents, and avoid making many of your own mistakes in life...as you are applying Godly wisdom to your own life. It really IS YOUR individual choice. Your way...or God's way. You can gain all of the wisdom you can from your parents, or you can gain your OWN wisdom, one black-and-blue-mark of life at a time. Just one last question..."Got Wisdom"?

Wisdom - What is Wisdom good for?

VERSE:

Proverbs 1:1-3

1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: 2 for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight; 3 for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair;

LESSON:

Wisdom - What is Wisdom good for?

This verse explains that Wisdom is good for "...instruction..", "...understanding words of insight...", and "...for receiving instruction in prudent behavior..." Godly wisdom has very practical uses in our lives. It provides understanding, insight, and a lesson in prudent behavior. All of these things help us to live a Godly life...in an "Un-Godly World". I am not trying to be negative...simply honest. Look around you. Would you not say that the world could use a lesson in "...prudent behavior..."?  Could we use more "...right..." and "...just..." and "...fair..." in the world today?

Wisdom - Use every day that you are given...to accumulate wisdom

VERSE:

Psalm 90:12

12 Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

LESSON:

Wisdom - Use every day that you are given...to accumulate wisdom

This verse reminds us that life is short...and that we need to understand that our life can be measured in a finite number of precious days. Because of those precious days granted to us by God...we should do our best, each and every day, to gain as much Godly Wisdom as we can. Read the Bible each day...even if only a verse or two. In a lifetime...by doing this simple thing each day, you will have read the Bible from cover to cover.

Thursday, March 24, 2011

Wisdom - All you need to do is...ask for it!

VERSE:

James 1:5-7

5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.

LESSON:

Wisdom - All you need to do is...ask for it!

In this verse we are told that you can actually ask God for wisdom. By this I feel the writer is reminding us that when we ask God for something, and it is God's will, he will give it to you. The Bible talks repeatedly about us seeking "Godly Wisdom" through prayer, meditation and study of God's word. Seek and you will find. Ask and it will be given. When you ask God for something, have faith, and do not have doubt. Believe that God can deliver...on what he promises. Even "Wisdom" is not beyond God's capability to give to you...if you will only ask.

Wisdom - Jesus grew in wisdom

VERSE:

Luke 2:52

52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

LESSON:

Wisdom - Jesus grew in wisdom

This verse tells us that from a very early age, Jesus "grew in wisdom and stature". How? He studied the Word of God from that time...what we would call the "Old Testament". The New Testament has wonderful lessons and stories...but so does the Old Testament. Read the Old Testament to be fully filled with Godly wisdom!

Wisdom - Stronger than many persons combined

VERSE:

Ecclesiastes 7:19

19 Wisdom makes one wise person more powerful than ten rulers in a city.

LESSON:

Wisdom - Stronger than many persons combined

This verse reminds us that in life...wisdom can be more powerful (stronger) in your life...and to your life...than the strength of "...ten rulers in a city...". Ten rulers may have much wealth and power over many things and many people. But, as for really affecting YOUR daily life...and paths that you take in life for your FUTURE...always remember that "...wisdom makes one wise person more powerful than ten rulers in a city...".

Wisdom - Built...brick by brick

VERSE:

Proverbs 24:3-4

3 By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; 4 through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.

LESSON:

Wisdom - Built...brick by brick

This verse compares the building of a house to building wisdom in our lives. You do not build a house overnight...and to build a good and beautiful house takes years, time, and effort. Spend time each day reviewing "Godly Wisdom" in the Bible...and building your "Spiritual House" here on earth.

Wisdom - more profitable than silver!

VERSE:

Proverbs 3:13-18

13 Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, 14 for she [it] is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. 15 She [it] is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her [it]. 16 Long life is in her [it's] right hand; in her [it's] left hand are riches and honor. 17 Her [it's] ways are pleasant ways, and all her [it's] paths are peace. 18 She [it] is a tree of life to those who take hold of her [it]; those who hold her [it] fast will be blessed.

LESSON:

Wisdom - more profitable than silver!

This verse tells us about how valuable God's wisdom is, in comparison to the things of this world that we may seek after, or consider "treasures of life". Why does this Bible verse writer feel wisdom is so valuable? Because, it tells us that wisdom's rewards include "understanding", "profitable", "Long life", "Riches" and "honor", "pleasant ways", "paths of peace", "tree of life", "blessed". Which of these spiritual treasures would you rather NOT be present in your life? Can the possession of silver, gold, and rubies provide you equal spiritual riches?

Wisdom - It created the heavens!

VERSE:

Psalm 136:5

5 To Him Who by wisdom and understanding made the heavens, for His mercy and loving-kindness endure forever;

LESSON:

Wisdom - It created the heavens!

This verse tells us that God created the heavens...through his wisdom and understanding. Have you ever gazed out into the heavens? Have you ever see the images from the Hubble telescope? You have therefore seen a glimpse of the "Wisdom and understanding" that made the heavens. And as an added benefit..."...his mercy and loving-kindness endure forever...".

Wisdom - God's wisdom and his own mysterious ways

VERSE:

Ephesians 1:7-9

7-8 Christ sacrificed his life's blood to set us free, which means that our sins are now forgiven. Christ did this because God was so kind to us. God has great wisdom and understanding, 9 and by what Christ has done, God has shown us his own mysterious ways.

LESSON:

Wisdom - God's wisdom and his own mysterious ways

This verse tells us that we can see at least a bit of God's wisdom, and his "own mysterious ways", in how he sent Jesus to die for our sins, so that our sins may be forgiven. God is indeed kind to us. God is indeed wise.

Wisdom - Faith from Gods power...not human wisdom

VERSE:

1 Corinthians 2:4-5

4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, 5 so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.

LESSON:

Wisdom - Faith from Gods power...not human wisdom

This verse tells us that the Holy Spirit helps us to share (My message and my preaching) to others...not because of our "human wisdom", but supported by the Power of God, as shared with us through the Holy Spirit.

Wisdom - Can you learn it from your parents?

VERSE:

Proverbs 5:1-2

1 My son [daughter], if you listen closely to my wisdom and good sense, 2 you will have sound judgment, and you will always know the right thing to say.

LESSON:

Wisdom - Can you learn it from your parents?

Answer...Yes, according to this verse...if you listen to the wisdom and good sense of your parents [assuming they are Godly parents], "...you will have sound judgment, and you will always know the right thing to say.

Wisdom - Where can it be found?

VERSE:

Job 28:12-24

12 But where can wisdom be found? Where does understanding dwell? 13 No mortal comprehends its worth; it cannot be found in the land of the living. 4 The deep says, “It is not in me”; the sea says, “It is not with me.” 15 It cannot be bought with the finest gold, nor can its price be weighed out in silver. 16 It cannot be bought with the gold of Ophir, with precious onyx or lapis lazuli. 17 Neither gold nor crystal can compare with it, nor can it be had for jewels of gold. 18 Coral and jasper are not worthy of mention; the price of wisdom is beyond rubies. 19 The topaz of Cush cannot compare with it; it cannot be bought with pure gold. 20 Where then does wisdom come from? Where does understanding dwell? 21 It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing, concealed even from the birds in the sky. 22 Destruction and Death say, “Only a rumor of it has reached our ears.” 23 God understands the way to it and he alone knows where it dwells, 24 for he views the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens.

LESSON:

Wisdom - Where can it be found?

Answer...read verse 12-24 if you don't cleraly see it the 1st time. Focus in on verse 23. The answer (as if you could not guess)...is God!

Wisdom - Wisdom through Jesus Christ!

VERSE:

Colossians 2:2-3

2 My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

LESSON:

Wisdom - Wisdom through Jesus Christ!

This verse recounts the writer's (Paul's) hope and prayer for the people at Colosse (as well as Christian Believers everywhere). He describes the "...treasures of wisdom and knowledge..." as being "hidden treasures" from God received through Jesus Christ. So in one respect...Godly wisdom is having "...full riches of complete understanding..." in order to know "...the mystery of God...". Godly wisdom...is knowing and living by God's ways. Our goal in life should be to know the things of God...and to live by them.

Wisdom - It is not what you know...but what you do with it!

VERSE:

Luke 7:35

35 But wisdom is shown to be right by the lives of those who follow it.

LESSON:

Wisdom - It is not what you know...but what you do with it!

This verse reminds us that Wisdom...in and of itself...is not automatically proven right or even valuable. The proof (rightness) of our wisdom is shown by the type of life that you live. Do you live "right" by Godly wisdom and know it...or do you try to live by worldly wisdom, and afterwards wonder if it is right? It is how you apply the wisdom that God has given to you in your every day life that makes it useful and valuable...and proves God's wisdom to be right. The proof in the "rightness" of your Godly wisdom is not measured in convincing arguments or in lofty thoughts and words..but in how you live your life...and how others judge how you have actually lived your life.

Wisdom - Godly wisdom...versus foolishness!

VERSE:

Proverbs 1:7

7 The reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is the beginning and the principal and choice part of knowledge [its starting point and its essence]; but fools despise skillful and godly Wisdom, instruction, and discipline.

LESSON:

Wisdom - Godly wisdom...versus foolishness!

This verse has been attributed to King Solomon, son of King David. Not too shabby a bunch. Read through the Bible, as well as secular history to see the many accomplishments of these two individuals. How did they become so famous and prosperous? How were they able to achieve in their lifetime...things that some entire nations have not been able to achieve in their entire national existence? Just luck? Good friends? Wealthy family and neighbors? Perhaps. But perhaps the thread through both of their success stories has more to do with "...godly Wisdom, instruction, and discipline...". Think about it. What would a wise person deduce from what we know about them. This verse tells us that Godly wisdom is both the starting point...and is the essence of Wisdom. Be smart. Consider what God has to offer you...compared to what the world has to offer you!

Wisdom - Can it be found without God?

VERSE:

Ecclesiastes 7:23

23 All this have I tried and proved by wisdom. I said, I will be wise [independently of God]--but it was far from me.

LESSON:

Wisdom - Can it be found without God?

This verse seems to imply that as hard as you try to find wisdom in this life [through research and study and pondering of deep thoughts], if you try to gain wisdom without including the wisdom of God (The Bible) in your study...wisdom will be far from found (You will not become wise). Can you become wise on your own...or must wisdom include the learning and applying of Biblical principles? You make the decision. Let us see how wise you truly are [or can become].

Wisdom - Fear (Respect/Reverence) of the Lord is true wisdom

VERSE:

Job 28:23-30

23 “God alone understands the way to wisdom; he knows where it can be found, 24 for he looks throughout the whole earth and sees everything under the heavens. 25 He decided how hard the winds should blow and how much rain should fall. 26 He made the laws for the rain and laid out a path for the lightning. 27 Then he saw wisdom and evaluated it. He set it in place and examined it thoroughly. 28 And this is what he says to all humanity: ‘The fear of the Lord is true wisdom; to forsake evil is real understanding.’”

LESSON:

Wisdom - Fear (Respect/Reverence) of the Lord is true wisdom

This verse tells us that God is the source and architect of wisdom. Without God, there would be no possibility of attaining wisdom. What is "true wisdom"? This verse tells us that "...The fear of the Lord is true wisdom; to forsake evil is real understanding...". So, to fear (respect/revere) God...is the source of true wisdom. To forsake (reject) evil...shows that we have true understanding.

Wisdom - Where do I get that?

VERSE:

1 Kings 4:30

30 Solomon’s wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the people of the East, and greater than all the wisdom of Egypt.

LESSON:

Wisdom - Where do I get that?

There is a difference between "Knowledge" and "Wisdom" just like there is a difference between "Data" and "Information". One is more "Facts oriented", while the other is more "Practical Life Application oriented". In the first case, you have bits of facts and figures...that are not necessarily useful to you, unless you know how to apply them in your every day life. "Knowing" the ingredients for a chemical experiment...without having the "Wisdom" of the proper order of adding the next ingredient, or the temperature to subject the compound to (and for how many minutes)...results in either an entirely new chemical breakthrough...or the fiery end to your existence here on earth. In this verse, we are told that the Old Testament icon, Solomon, had wisdom that "...was greater than the wisdom of all the people of the East, and greater than all the wisdom of Egypt". If you will read the secular history books (not the Bible), you will find countless stories of the wisdom of both the Eastern philosophers...and of the wisdom of Egypt. This verse gives a certain "world view"...that the Wisdom of Solomon may have been the greatest of his time. We will spend the next few Blog entries examining some of the words of Solomon. Wisdom? Where do you get that? Be careful what sources you search for the answer to the question of what is "Wisdom". All sources are not equal. Know your sources!

Money - What was this story about the "Money changers"?

VERSE(s):

Matthew 21:12

12 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves.

Mark 11:15

15 On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves,

John 2:15

15 So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.

LESSON:

Money - What was this story about the "Moneychangers"?

In these verses, the three writers tell the story of Jesus expelling the "Money changers" from the Temple. Why were they there, what business were they in, and why did Jesus force them out?

In Jesus time, every Israelite greater than the age of 19 years was required to pay into the sacred treasury of the Temple. The required amount was a half of a shekel every year as an offering. It was required to be paid ONLY in an exact Hebrew half-shekel piece. (No foreign money was accepted). The Money changers were in the business of setting up their shop in the outer temple courtyard and exchanging (for a fee) foreign moneys for these Jewish half-shekels. These Jews came up to Jerusalem from all parts of the world, usually at the time of PASSOVER. Jesus drove them out of the temple...as the purpose of the Temple is worshiping and adoration of the LORD GOD...not of making money for individuals.  When our Lord drove the money-changers out, their tables were overturned and they themselves were forced out.  How can we learn from this story? Our worship, wherever we do that...should be focused on Prayer, Praise, and adoration of the LORD GOD Almighty. Anything that we do at "Church" that takes us away from that primary goal...should be avoided.

Money - Help others...with no interest?

VERSE:

Exodus 22:25

25 “If you lend money to one of my people among you who is needy, do not treat it like a business deal; charge no interest.

LESSON:

Money - Help others...with no interest?

This verse is another call in the Old Testament to help "...my people among you who is needy...". It however warns "...do not treat it like a business deal; charge no interest". This verse calls us to help others that you know of who are in need in a way that is a true expression of God's love and compassion. You are to help others...just for the sake of helping. Charging interest (making it a business deal), is helping yourself...not the other person. Find a way to help others today...where you are not helping yourself first.

Money - Would your rather have wisdom or money?

VERSE:

Ecclesiastes 7:12

12 Wisdom and money can get you almost anything, but only wisdom can save your life.

LESSON:

Money - Would your rather have wisdom or money?

This verse makes the argument clear...at least from the Biblical perspective. Having wisdom and money is good..."...but only wisdom can save your life...". In a physical world sense...having wisdom can help you to avoid some of the many dangers of modern life that can ruin...or even end your life. Drugs, Drinking, Smoking, over-eating...etc. In the spiritual world sense...having wisdom may lead you to choose accepting Jesus as your LORD and savior and of serving God...rather than rejecting both. It is up to all of us. Would we rather have wisdom...or money?

Money - Are we giving to our Church as we should?

VERSE:

2 Chronicles 24:5

5 He called together the priests and Levites and said to them, “Go to the towns of Judah and collect the money due annually from all Israel, to repair the temple of your God. Do it now.” But the Levites did not act at once.

LESSON:

Money - Are we giving to our Church as we should?

This verse is from the Old Testament where it describes the Temple in Jerusalem being in great need of repair. Joash was the King, and called all of the people to remember their obligation to yearly donations to support and maintain the church. Some of the church members (The Levites) did not heed his call, and made no donations as required. What are we doing with our money? Are we adequately supporting the church in it's missions? Can we do more, by denying ourselves something that we do not really need. (I know that I could). Give something...give more if you can. Give at least what you should...and give it cheerfully. You are helping the work of the LORD!

Money - What do you spend it on?

VERSE:

Isaiah 55:2

2 Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare.

LESSON:

Money - What do you spend it on?

Money also is a gift from God. What and how we spend it on is one more indication of what we put first in our lives. What do we value in life? Thing or people? Wholesome things or wasteful things? This verse calls us to spend (time/money) on the things of God...as expressed in "The Word of God" or the "Good News". Spend more time with God today...than you did yesterday. You will find that it will be time/money well spent.

Money - What are you doing with your"Talents" (Money/Gifts) ?

VERSE:

Matthew 25:24-30

24 “Then the servant with the one bag of silver came and said, ‘Master, I knew you were a harsh man, harvesting crops you didn’t plant and gathering crops you didn’t cultivate. 25 I was afraid I would lose your money, so I hid it in the earth. Look, here is your money back.’

26 “But the master replied, ‘You wicked and lazy servant! If you knew I harvested crops I didn’t plant and gathered crops I didn’t cultivate, 27 why didn’t you deposit my money in the bank? At least I could have gotten some interest on it.’

28 “Then he ordered, ‘Take the money from this servant, and give it to the one with the ten bags of silver. 29 To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away. 30 Now throw this useless servant into outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

LESSON:

Money - What are you doing with your"Talents" (Money/Gifts) ?

In this verse Jesus talks about money (Talents) but he is also talking about our gifts, talents, skills, blessings, abilities and the gift of time. When talking about the best way to invest your "Talents" meaning money...this parable reminds us that even in Jesus time...there were things such as "Bankers" and that you could leave money (Talents) with them to earn "interest". This is still a good lesson for today...invest some of your money instead of spending all of it...and insure that you are earning the most interest that you can. The greater lesson of this parable is really the question of What are you doing with your "Talents" (our gifts, talents, skills, blessings, abilities and the gift of time given to us by God). Think about it. What are your "Talents"...and how wisely have you invested them...on behalf of "God's Kingdom" so far in your life. If you have not "invested" so well so far in life...then re-examine your life..and find better ways to "invest" the "Talents" that God has given to each of us.

Money - Do not charge Interest on Money?

VERSE:

Leviticus 25:35-37

35  “If one of your fellow Israelites falls into poverty and cannot support himself, support him as you would a foreigner or a temporary resident and allow him to live with you. 36 Do not charge interest or make a profit at his expense. Instead, show your fear of God by letting him live with you as your relative. 37 Remember, do not charge interest on money you lend him or make a profit on food you sell him.

LESSON:

Money - Do not charge Interest on Money?

This verse is talking about one Israelite helping another Israelite who "...falls into poverty and cannot support himself...".  What this verse cautions, us is to "...not charge interest or make a profit at his expense...".  I think we can all easily understand this verse's application to a similar current-day situation where one Christian is helping another Christian who is in need.  Of what help would you truly be...if you provide help to the other Christian...only so that you can make a profit.  In a greater sense...I think this verse calls us all, bankers and businessmen alike...to not take advantage of other people.  If you have heard anything in the business news recently about "Pay Day Loans" and "Car Title Loans", (or even Credit Card Interest Rates) you will get a flavor of what this Bible verse is telling us NOT TO DO.

Money - How much money does it take to share God's word?

VERSE:

Luke 9:3

3 “Take nothing for your journey,” he instructed them. “Don’t take a walking stick, a traveler’s bag, food, money, or even a change of clothes.

LESSON:

Money - How much money does it take to share God's word?

If you read this verse completely literally...Jesus told the Disciples that what they really needed to be properly equipped to share the Word of God...was what he had already given to them. Was it money? No. It was "The Good News" that he had shared with them. When we make excuses for why we don't share God's love and his message with others...remember this verse. You already have everything that you need for "...your journey...". There is nothing else that you need to take. No, not even money is needed for this "journey".

Money - You can't buy God's Love.

VERSE:

Acts 8:20

20 But Peter replied, “May your money be destroyed with you for thinking God’s gift can be bought!

LESSON:

Money - You can't buy God's Love.

This verse reminds us that God's gifts are a free gift..and that they cannot be "bough" with our money or with our efforts. Praise the LORD, and accept the free gift of his love.

Salvation - The LORD is Great!

VERSE:

Psalm 40:16

16 But may all who search for you be filled with joy and gladness in you. May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout, “The Lord is great!”

LESSON:

Salvation - The LORD is Great!

This verse encourages us to "...be filled with joy and gladness..." for the Salvation that we have received from the LORD. Our response? If you love God's salvation...shout "The LORD is Great!".

Salvation - Christ Jesus...worth waiting for!

VERSE:

Hebrews 9:28

28 Even so it is that Christ, having been offered to take upon Himself and bear as a burden the sins of many once and once for all, will appear a second time, not to carry any burden of sin nor to deal with sin, but to bring to full salvation those who are [eagerly, constantly, and patiently] waiting for and expecting Him.

LESSON:

Salvation - Christ Jesus...worth waiting for!

In this verse we are told that Jesus gave up his own life...to save our sins...or in other words...to provide for our salvation. Our response to Jesus' bearing the burden of our sins...is to wait "eagerly, constantly and patiently" for his return.

Salvation - Salvation means "Deliverance"

VERSE:

Psalm 79:9

9 Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of Your name! Deliver us, forgive us, and purge away our sins for Your name's sake.

LESSON:

Salvation - Salvation means "Deliverance"

In this verse, the writer equates "salvation" with "deliverance". It means that God forgives us...helps us, and purges away our sins...not because of anything that we have done...but for his "name's sake" alone. Praise be to the LORD!

Salvation - a stronghold in time of trouble

VERSE:

Psalm 37:39

39 The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD; he is their stronghold in time of trouble.

LESSON:

Salvation - a stronghold in time of trouble

In this verse, we are told that "...The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD..." This implies that those receiving salvation are striving to be righteous. It further explains that God is our stronghold in time of trouble. In a way, this verse is telling us that salvation is not just for the next world...but also for this world...when the LORD saves us from evil and from harm. Lean on God in your times of trouble. He will be your stronghold.

Salvation - Something to rejoice in!

VERSE:

Psalm 35:9

9 Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD and delight in his salvation.

LESSON:

Salvation - Something to rejoice in!

This verse calls us to "rejoice" and to "delight" in God's salvation. Think deeply about what the true worth of salvation is....and you will both rejoice and delight in the LORD!

Salvation - Something to sing about!

VERSE:

1 Chronicles 16:23

23 Sing to the LORD, all the earth; proclaim his salvation day after day.

LESSON:

Salvation - Something to sing about!

This verse calls us to "...Sing to the LORD..." and to "...proclaim his salvation day after day...". We are to be so happy about our salvation...that we are not only to remember it each and every day of our life...but we are called to sing about it each day! When you wake up tomorrow morning...remember to "sing to the LORD"!

Salvation - A rock that can not be shaken!

VERSE:

Psalm 62:6

6 He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will not be shaken.

LESSON:

Salvation - A rock that can not be shaken!

This verse compares the certainty of our Salvation through God...to a rock, and a fortress, where we can not be shaken. What wonderful imagery of the certainty of our salvation...and of God's unchanging protection for each of us. He is our rock...and our fortress. When you go through difficulties in life...remember these previous words...and repeat to yourself..."...I will not be shaken...".

Salvation - Who alone can save us?

VERSE:

Acts 4:12

12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.

LESSON:

Salvation - Who alone can save us?

This very short verse is very, very, clear. "...no one else..", "...there is no other name under heaven..." by which we can be saved...but through Jesus.

Salvation - Something to Celebrate!

VERSE:

Psalm 116:13

13 I will lift up the cup of salvation and praise the Lord’s name for saving me.

LESSON:

Salvation - Something to Celebrate!

This verse is a quick sentence of PRAISE to God...for granting us all salvation through Christ Jesus. Salvation is something worth celebrating! Take up the cup (spiritual cup) TODAY and EVERY DAY and praise the Lord's name for saving us all!!!

Salvation - What we have been waiting for since the beginning of time!

VERSE:

Genesis 49:18

18   I wait in hope for your salvation, God.

LESSON:

Salvation - What we have been waiting for since the beginning of time
This verse comes from Genesis. The Beginnings. The Origins. The Start. From the beginning...God had a plan for salvation...and his people have waited. Some patiently...and some not so patiently. Old Testament believers were to "...wait in hope..." for salvation. Well, the waiting is now over. What a wonderful gift we have received...salvation...through Christ Jesus!

Salvation - Who will save you?

VERSE:

Isaiah 12:2
2 Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The LORD, the LORD himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation.”

LESSON:

Salvation - Who will save you?

Life is full of challenges...and also of dangers. Through each of these things...we have hope. Why? As this ancient Bible verse instruct us...God is our salvation...so we may trust...and not be afraid. He is our strength and our defense. He is our salvation!

Forgiveness - Forgiving until it hurts!

VERSE:

Luke 23:34

34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.

LESSON:

Forgiveness - Forgiving until it hurts!

In this verse Jesus is forgiving...even unto the bitter end. Even as the soldiers prepared for his final execution, and were busy gambled for his garments...Jesus continued to forgive. What kind of Love and Loyalty to God would it take for you and me to react that way if we found ourselves in a similar situation? I can't even manage to act that way when someone cuts me off on the highway. Our goal in life should be to Love and cherish our relationship with God so much...that we will forgive until it hurts!

Forgiveness - Even believers deserve forgiveness by believers

VERSE:

Luke 17:3

3 So watch yourselves! “If a believer sins, correct him. If he changes the way he thinks and acts, forgive him.

LESSON:

Forgiveness - Even believers deserve forgiveness by believers
This lesson reminds us of two things. Firstly, just being a believer does not guarantee that they will not sin (trespass) against you. Secondly, if you notice that a believer sins (trespasses) against you, you should gently offer correction. If they take that correction to heart and change the way that they think and act...you are then to forgive them.

Forgiveness - Forgive others, and you will be forgiven.

VERSE:

Luke 6:37

37 “Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn others, or it will all come back against you. Forgive others, and you will be forgiven.

LESSON:

Forgiveness - Forgive others, and you will be forgiven.

This verse gives us two warnings, and one promise, about judging, condemning and forgiving. The first two were "do not" warnings. The third...was a promise. "...Forgive others, and you will be forgiven...".

Monday, February 7, 2011

Forgiveness - You must forgive...to be forgiven!!!

VERSE:

Matthew 6:14-15

14 “If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. 15 But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.

LESSON:

Forgiveness - You must forgive...to be forgiven!!!

This lesson reminds that since we have been forgiven...we must also forgive others.

Forgiveness - What are we taught to pray for?

VERSE:

Luke 11:4

4 and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. And don’t let us yield to temptation.

LESSON:

Forgiveness - What are we taught to pray for?
This verse reminds us through the teaching of "The Lord's Prayer", we should continue to pray for the forgiveness of sins...but also that we should always remember to forgive the sins of others!

Forgiveness - God sent Jesus to forgive sins

VERSE:

Acts 5:30-31

29-32 Peter and the apostles answered, "It's necessary to obey God rather than men. The God of our ancestors raised up Jesus, the One you killed by hanging him on a cross. God set him on high at his side, Prince and Savior, to give Israel the gift of a changed life and sins forgiven. And we are witnesses to these things. The Holy Spirit, whom God gives to those who obey him, corroborates every detail."

LESSON:

Forgiveness - God sent Jesus to forgive sins

This verse is a mini-theological paragraph stating the essence of the "Good News" of the New Testament. Jesus came into the world...to save sins (forgiveness of sins).

Forgiveness - Rescued from darkness

VERSE:

Colossians 1:13-14

13 For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, 14 who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.

LESSON:

Forgiveness - Rescued from darkness

This verse reminds us that is was through Jesus Christ that our freedom was purchased, and that our sins were forgiven. It also reminds us that this freedom has "...rescued us from the kingdom of darkness...and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son...". We are no longer bound by the chains of sin...and are no longer a prisoner of the forces of evil...in this world or the next.

Forgiveness - Through whom is forgiveness proclaimed?

VERSE:

Acts 13:38

38 “Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.

LESSON:

Forgiveness - Through whom is forgiveness proclaimed?

This verse tells us that through the "Good News" of Jesus Christ, God's forgiveness is proclaimed to you. What does that mean? It means that though Jesus Christ's message to us, God officially and publicly proclaims "the message" of how we can receive the forgiveness of sins. It is a simple but profound message. All that you need to do is...read...and believe.

VERSE:

Psalm 130:3-4

3 If you, LORD, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand? 4 But with you there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve you.

LESSON:

Forgiveness - God keeps no records!

This verse reminds us that we are fortunate indeed that God keeps no records of our Sins. If he did...this verse asks "...Lord, who could stand?". In return for God's forgiveness...this verse suggests that we should serve God with reverence. Do your best today (and every day) to serve God with reverence!

Forgiveness - All you need to do is ask!

VERSE:

Psalm 86:5

5 O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive, so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.

Forgiveness - All you need to do to receive it is to ask!

This verse reminds us that God is "...so ready to forgive..." He is "good" and "...so full of unfailing love...". All we need to do is to ask for his help, and to ask to be forgiven. It is that simple. If you have NOT already done so...ask today!

Grace - Grace in your heart!

VERSE:

Colossians 3:16

16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

LESSON:

Grace - Grace in your heart!

This verse encourages us each to be filled with wonderful qualities that can only be instilled within us through the words of Christ Jesus. When filled with these words...we will posses various Christian blessings that we will share with others through psalms, hymns and spiritual songs "...singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord...". Be filled with the words of Christ Jesus...to the point that you sing with grace in your heart to the Lord!

Grace - What is it good for?

VERSE:

Romans 5:21

21 So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules instead, giving us right standing with God and resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

LESSON:

Grace - What is it good for?

This verse contrasts the destructive powers of sin with the redeeming qualities on Grace. It argues that Sin leads only unto death...but that Grace results in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

VERSE:

2 Peter 3:18

18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.

LESSON:

Grace - Grow in Grace!

This verse seems to be implying that the more you know about Jesus (Through Bible Study, prayer and reflection), the more that you will be filled with the Grace of God. Grace - Pass along the Grace

VERSE:

Ephesians 4:29

29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.

LESSON:

Grace - Pass along the Grace
This verse reminds us that to those who have been shown "Grace" by God...we should be very careful to only pass along "graceful" words to others. The Grace we have received...should be shared with others...though ONLY Godly speech.

Grace - Grace = Gifts from God

VERSE:

Romans 12:6-10

6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

LESSON:

Grace - Grace = Gifts from God

This verse tells us that the Grace of God may manifest itself in our lives through various "Gifts" from God. They could be part of the personal skills, talents or abilities in our lives in the form of "prophesying", "Serving", "Teaching", "encourage", "giving", "lead" or "Mercy". Always do your best to utilize your God-given gifts, skills, talents, and abilities, granted through the Grace of God), to be put to best use for the betterment of God's kingdom here on earth.

Grace - Grace, not our own righteousness

VERSE:

Galatians 2:21

21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!”

LESSON:

Grace - Grace, not our own righteousness

This verse explains to us the importance of God's freely given (not earned) Grace. We can not discount the irreplaceable nature of God's gift of grace, thinking that we can somehow gain "righteousness" by our own thoughts, words or actions. This verse reminds us that if that were possible...then there would have been no need for Jesus to have died on our behalf for our sins. The truth is...we can not gain "righteousness"...on our own...but only through the freely given gift of Grace from God...through the shed blood of Christ Jesus. God's Grace is our undeserved gift based upon Jesus' suffering, death and resurrection which makes our sin white as snow.

Grace - A blessing to be prayed for!

VERSE:

2 Corinthians 1:2

2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

LESSON:

Grace - A blessing to be prayed for!

In this very short portion of today's verse, the author (Paul the Apostle) gives a wonderful prayer as one of his opening lines in his letter to the church in Corinth (Corinth was the Roman capital city of the region known as Achaia which is in the southern half of present-day Greece). All was NOT well in the church in Corinth (the people were known as Corinthians) due to multiple problems with church division and mis-interpretation and application of the Gospel by those in the Corinthian church that Paul considered "false teachers". Paul was well aware of the power and value of God's "Grace". So much so...that he used it in his heart-felt prayer of welcome to the church in Corinth. We should pray daily for the granting of "grace" by God in our own lives...as well as in the greater body of Christ...his church universal. Pray for Grace today. It is a gift more precious than gold!

Grace - Grace received through Christ Jesus

VERSE:

Romans 3:22-24

22 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

LESSON:

Grace - Grace received through Christ Jesus

This verse tells us that although we have all sinned, through faith in Jesus Christ...we can find redemption through grace. We can be justified and be deemed righteous by God through his grace and our belief in Jesus Christ. God's grace is given to us freely...due to our belief in Jesus Christ.

Grace - Grace is not a "Get Out of Jail Free" Card!

VERSE:

Romans 6:14-15

14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace. 15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means!

LESSON:

Grace - Grace is not a "Get Out of Jail Free" Card!

This verse reminds us of the difference of being "under the law" or "under grace". It warns the reader that we should NOT use "Grace" as an excuse for purposely sinning. Don't repay God's gift of "Grace" by knowing sinning...because you think that you are already covered by Grace. Grace was never intended as a "Get Out of Jail Free" Card!

Grace - God's Grace

VERSE:

1 Corinthians 1:4

4 I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus.

LESSON:

Grace - God's Grace

In this verse we are told by the writer that God's Grace has been given to us through Christ Jesus. (If you look up the word "Grace" in the dictionary you will find that it is defined as something like "the freely given, unmerited favor and love of God"). God's grace is therefore given freely...through Christ Jesus...even though we do not really deserve it.

Love - Love that overflows!

VERSE:

1 Thessalonians 3:12

12 May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you.

LESSON:

Love - Love that overflows!

Christians love each other...and "...everyone else...", according to this Bible verse. The Love of God, shown through the example of the life of Jesus Christ...we can gain a glimpse of what God's love is like...and know the perfect model of what our love for others should be like. Being human and fallible...this model of perfect love is a goal that we should always reach for...with the realization that we may never reach perfection in Love in this life. This should not however deter us from working to make our "...love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else...". Try to love others more today...than you did yesterday!

Love - God Loves us to death!

VERSE:

Romans 5:8

8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

LESSON:

Love - God Loves us to death!

In spited of our sinful nature...God loves us. Before he even knew any of us who are alive in the year 2011...he loved us...and showed how far he would take his love for us...even unto death of his only begotten Son. In this way...God first demonstrated his unlimited love for us.

Love - Love God's Laws!

VERSE:

Psalm 119:97

97 Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long.

LESSON:

Love - Love God's Laws!

In order to truly and deeply love God...you need to get to know him. How can you do that? Read his words, that were written especially for you (The Bible). As this Bible passage writer has expressed...once you know what "Good News" messages that God has sent for you through the writings in the Bible, you will learn to love God's laws...and to meditate on them all day long. Work each day to fill your mind with good and helpful thoughts and ideas. Choose God's laws from the Bible as the best source of good and helpful thoughts in the Universe!

Love - Who do you love more?

VERSE:

1 John 2:15

15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.

LESSON:

Love - Who do you love more?

Why would the Bible tell us this? It sure sounds negative about living in this world. Is there anything in this world that the Bible thinks is worth loving? This verse is not telling us to hate the world and everything in it. After all...God made the world...and then declared "It is Good". What this verse is cautioning us about is loving the things of this world and the things that most people in society love (Seek after), that you put God last....and therefore have no real place in your life for God. The first Commandment is "You shall have no other Gods before me". If you truly love God, you will love him more than everything else in your life...including everything else in this world.

Love - Disciples Love one another!

VERSE:

John 13:35

35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

LESSON:

Love - Disciples Love one another!

How will others know that we are Disciples of Jesus Christ? This verse tells us clearly...that we show our Discipleship by our love for each other. Christ's followers are expected to love each other...and to treat each other like they do. How many times have you seen anger, hurt feelings, and disagreements in the organized church? In a woman's or men's church group? In the body of rulings elders? In the youth group? In this verse we are reminded that others will judge if we are truly Jesus' disciples...by how much love they see expressed in and among the groups of believers. Whenever you have the opportunity...show love in your group of believers whether small or large. That is the disciple's way.

Love - Love the unlovable!

VERSE:

Luke 6:32

32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.

LESSON:

Love - Love the unlovable!

In this verse we are reminded that it is much easier to love those who love you, than those who do not love you back. This verse calls us to love other persons, even if they don't love us back. Indirectly, this verse is calling us to love those that others refuse to love. The mean person in your circle. The poor person. The less than attractive person. The loner. The loud and boisterous person. The person that never does anything nice. The person who always puts themselves first. The kind of person that...only God could love.

Love - What can we give to God in return for his Love?

VERSE:

John 14:15

15 “If you love me, keep my commands.

LESSON:

Love - What can we give to God in return for his Love?

In this verse we are told that we can keep God's commandments if we love him. We don't have to move mountains, we don't have to change societies, we don't have to make all kinds of promises...we merely need to follow God's commandments. I am not saying that this is the easiest thing in the world to do...as God does have high standards for each of us...but it is more than a bargain in exchange for what we receive daily from God through his love for us.

Love - Can we be separated from God's Love?

VERSE:

Romans 8:39

39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

LESSON:

Love - Can we be separated from God's Love?

In this verse we are told that NOTHING IN CREATION....(height, depth, etc.) will be able to separate us from the LOVE of God...."...that is in Christ Jesus our Lord...". God's love is with us always, no matter where we find ourselves in this world...or in our life journey. No matter how high you feel in life...or how low you feel...God still loves you. What a wonderful assurance that the LORD God's LOVE will always be with us. ALWAYS!!!

Love - Hate evil, love good!

VERSE:

Amos 5:14-15

14  Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the LORD God Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is. 15  Hate evil, love good;  maintain justice in the courts. Perhaps the LORD God Almighty will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph.

LESSON:

Love - Hate evil, love good!

In this verse we are told that the LORD God will always be with us if we "...seek good, not evil...". We are instructed not only to seek good...but also that we are to "love good" and "Hate evil". This command is not just for us as individuals and private citizens...but also for us to be civic minded enough to work to "...maintain justice in the courts...". God's clear message and command here is all about our need to seek "good" and to avoid (as well as hate) things which are evil. It clearly applies to individuals as well as to our various forms of government institutions.

Love - God's Love!

VERSE:

Ephesians 5:1-2

1 Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

LESSON:

Love - God's Love!

In this verse we are told that God forms the most perfect example of what it means to "Love". It tells us that we are loved by God, and therefore should "...walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us...". God is calling us to a new understanding of "Love" in the New Year and in this our next day of life here on earth. It is a "sacrificial love". Not one that demands something for self...but one that freely gives everything first to others. Take a few moments today to think about what your definition of "Love" is. Does your definition match God's definition? I would encourage you to consider adopting God's definition of "Love" as quickly and joyfully as you can today.

New Year's resolutions?

VERSE:

Isaiah 1:16-17

16 Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes! Cease to do evil, 17 Learn to do right! Seek justice, relieve the oppressed, and correct the oppressor. Defend the fatherless, plead for the widow.

LESSON:

New Year's resolutions?
New Year's resolutions. Many people make them...but very few us us are really able to fulfill them. If we were to tell God what he would like to hear us say as far as making a New Year's resolution, he would most likely ask us to pick one from the list of choices offered in today's Bible verse. Carefully read the list. Is there at least one item in the list that would make a good New Year's resolution for you? If so, choose that one...and try to improve in that area of your life in the coming year. The point is...all of us have fallen short of the Grace of God...and can all improve, through the Grace of God. Make a Biblical resolution this year. Even if you are not able to totally fulfill it, you will not regret it.

So, what do you want from me?

VERSE:

Micah 6:8

8 He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, and to love kindness and mercy, and to humble yourself and walk humbly with your God?

LESSON:

So, what do you want from me?

This verse reminds us that God has taught us what is right (what is good) through the prophets and though his words to us that have been captured in the Bible. Once we know what is in the Bible, it should help us to discern what God expects of us. This verse gives us a fairly good overview of what God expects from us. It tells us that God requires us "...to do justly, and to love kindness and mercy, and to humble yourself and walk humbly with your God". Read again some of the key words here as they are worth remembering [do justly, love kindness and mercy, humble yourself, walk humbly with your God].

They called him a Nazarene!

VERSE:

Luke 2:39-4039 When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth. 40 And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.

LESSON:

They called him a Nazarene!

Mary and Joseph were good Jewish parents. When the proper time came for Jesus' parents to present him in the temple, they took him to the temple. After this, the verse tells us that "...Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord", and then they returned to Nazareth where this baby Jesus was to spend his early years as he grew into a boy and then into a man. Because of the name of his native town, Jesus was known as a "Nazarene". Future scripture lessons will describe the mission and ministry of this Nazarene.

Take it one day at a time!

VERSE:

Psalm 90:12

12 Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

LESSON:

Take it one day at a time!

When we end a year, we quite often look too much into the future of the next year for things we hope for or wish for. When we do this...we fail to enjoy each and every day that the Lord has given us. This verse reminds us to slow down and enjoy each and every day, learning what we can about life each and every day. Those are the things that help us to develop wisdom. Take life "one day at a time". Enjoy and savor each day.

Sunday, January 2, 2011

Look ahead...don't look back!

VERSE:

Isaiah 43:18-21

18 “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.

19 See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. 20 The wild animals honor me, the jackals and the owls, because I provide water in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen, 21 the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise.

LESSON:

Look ahead...don't look back!

At this time of year (New Years), we often look back on the past year. TV is full of retrospectives. Best events of 2010...Worst events of 2010, Sports accomplishments of 2010, Notable persons who have passed away in 2010. We do have to briefly remember what has happened in the past year, as that helps us to have a good perspective for the future year. Wisdom is actually build upon prior experiences. What we should not do is dwell on the past to the extent that we limit the wonderful possibilities that God can do with and for us in our lives. This verse encourages us that we "...do not dwell on the past...". Look to the future year as we are led by God. This verse reminds us to "...See, I am doing a new thing!". Allow God to do new things for and with your life in the new year. Happy 2011!

New Creatures in a New Year!

VERSE:

2 Corinthians 5:17

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

LESSON:

New Creatures in a New Year!

What a wonderful way to start a New Year...other than to be reminded that according to this Bible verse...if you are a follower of Christ...you have become a "...new creation...". It tells us that "...the old has gone, the new is here!". What a wonderful way to start the New Year. A new creation in Christ!
