VERSE:
Proverbs 9:10-12
10 "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
11 For through me your days will be many,
and years will be added to your life.
12 If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you;
if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer."
LESSON:
In this verse, we are told that "...The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom...". In this verse, the word "fear" means a number of things; such as respect for God, recognition of the Power and Authority of God, showing awe of God, or feeling dread of the ultimate judgment of God. If you have feelings about God like this...you will be more likely to be "humbled" by God's presence and power...and less reliant upon your own human knowledge and power, your abilities or your physical strength...alone. You will rely more upon God. It is through these feelings of reverence for God...that you become humble enough to admit that you do not know everything...and that you look to God for his teachings in our life. The more you know God's ways, and the more you practice God's ways in your life, the more you demonstrate your growing "wisdom" in the ways of the LORD. This verse promises us the possibility of a longer life if you accept and practice God's wisdom...and also promises other rewards as you develop God's wisdom as demonstrated through your life's actions, words and decisions. Christians look to the Bible as the source of the written word about God's wisdom that is shared with us.
